Half Way Around the World

I'm really doing this.  I am leaving the country and I am literally going to the other side of the world.  China is a 12 hour time difference.  I am excited to experience new things.  Today I am more humdrum about the trip as I take care of logistics.  Preparing for the worst case scenario zaps the fun out of anticipating the trip, but it feels good to have it organized so I know that everything will go smoothly.

It's a bit stressful to think about being away from my daughters for 2 weeks.  Their dad and I have practiced using Skype so I know I'll be able to talk to them regularly.  This is a once in a lifetime experience for me so I had to step out of my comfort zone and sign up for this trip.  The girls know that I am leaving for a long trip.  My three year old seems to be taking it in stride.  My five year old is a little more worried.  She was teary-eyed the other morning.  I reminded her that we'd talk on the computer, but that didn't help her.  I reminded her that I will love her the whole time I am on my trip and that seemed to help.  I know they'll be fine at their dad's house.  I've never been away from my daughters for more than 4 days at a time, but I think I'll be ok since I'll be experiencing so many new things.

This trip is to study Early Childhood Education in China.  I am working on my Masters degree in Early Childhood Special Education.  In Shanghai, we'll visit East China Normal University to see how they train their early childhood teachers.  In Beijing, we'll visit the 3e International School to observe a dual language primary school that serves children from around the world.  I am excited to see how the Chinese do things similar and different in their education system as compared to what I am being trained to do in my program at UNL.

This blog will be my journal of the trip.  Each night I'll upload pictures and write about that day's experiences.  After the trip is over, I'm going to have it printed into a hard cover book to keep.

11 days until we leave!
